Admirals Room

Upstairs, you will find the Admirals room for our pre-schoolers. We take advantage of the children’s ever growing knowledge to prepare them for their next adventure in school. We fulfil this by instilling confidence, independence and encouraging curiosity and exploration through their play. We work alongside parents to get their child school ready by suggesting activities to help with letter and number recognition, phonics and early reading and writing. We are also able to provide advice on choosing the right school for your child.

A typical day…

08:00 – 08:30 The Admirals make their way in the front door and head on upstairs for a hearty breakfast.

08:30 – 09:00 After breakfast, there is a short circle time where the Admirals discuss what they have brought in for show and tell that day, as well as their fortnightly topic and what they will be learning about in the coming week. This all contributes to initiating conversations, learning how to ask questions, learning to concentrate, to listen and to take turns.

09:00 – 10:00 All children are encouraged to put on their own coats and shoes, as well as do up their own zips and buttons. The Admirals head to the garden for planned activities and a good old run around! Activities may also build on what the Admirals have been learning indoors such as numeracy in the water, literacy in the sand or using their imagination to make up stories in the fort.

10:00 – 11:45 The Admirals enjoy a healthy snack and they then enjoy more planned activities including role play in the home corner, quiet reading on the book balcony, mark making and art in the art shack or construction. There is also one to one time with their key children to work on letter and number recognition, learn about shape and measure and study how to operate modern ICT.

11.45 – 12:30 The Admirals set up the tables for lunch alongside their teachers and serve their own healthy lunch.

12:30 – 13:15 After lunch, the Admirals sit for group time and discuss their fortnightly topic, the “letter of the week”, read some stories or if anyone took Eddy the Teddy home, they will tell us what adventures he has been on over the weekend.

13:15 – 14:45 Quiet time for the Admirals, which includes resting and free play.

14:45 – 16:15 The children are offered organic milk and then begin their afternoon which will include activities such as cooking, technology, art or more discussion time around “What do we want to change in the home corner, garden or routine? What are good choices? And how do we keep ourselves safe?”. We also join the rest of the nursery in the garden and here the Admirals learn to play and communicate with the younger children, showing their caring and sensitive nature. When the opportunity arises, we also head to our local Bishop’s Park to play bat and ball in the field, to create castles in the sand or discuss what we see on a riverside walk.

16:15 – 18:30 The last meal of the day is tea time and we yet again use this opportunity for a social gathering at the table. After tea, the children enjoy free play until parents arrive for a thorough feedback of how the day has gone.
